Batu, 19th July 2025 – The Statistics Study Program at Airlangga University (UNAIR), through its Community Service (Pengmas) program, successfully held a comprehensive training titled “Strategies for Strengthening Teacher Competence and Skills in the Integration of Science, Technology, and Mathematics (STEM) for the Minimum Competency Assessment (AKM) at Al-Izzah Batu High School.” This initiative demonstrates UNAIR’s commitment to supporting the improvement of educational quality and maintaining academic integrity in the digital era, in line with the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The all-day training was attended by teachers from Al-Izzah Batu High School, and featured expert speakers from Airlangga University, namely Dr. M. Fariz Fadillah Mardianto, S.Si., M.Si. and Dita Amelia, S.Si., M.Si.
The series of activities began with preparation and a team briefing at 7:00 a.m. Western Indonesian Time, followed by participant registration. The opening session began with the singing of the national anthem, Indonesia Raya, and remarks from the Principal, a representative of the lecturers, and the Head of Community Service. Participants took a pre-test at 8:45 a.m. Western Indonesian Time (WIB). This pre-test aimed to gauge teachers’ initial understanding before delivering the core material.
The main material session focused on the Minimum Competency Assessment (AKM), a key instrument in the National Assessment (AN). The AN represents a paradigm shift from the National Examination, with the primary goal of comprehensively evaluating the education system to improve the quality of learning. AKM specifically measures essential learning outcomes such as literacy, numeracy, and character, while also encouraging the development of higher-order thinking skills.
The training also emphasized the urgency of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) integration. STEM is considered vital because it facilitates the integration of knowledge and encourages real-world problem solving, as well as the application of scientific concepts in everyday life. The aligned goals of AKM and STEM in developing critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and creating meaningful learning experiences directly support Goal 4: Quality Education of the SDGs. The AKM material was presented in depth from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. Western Indonesian Time (WIB).
Responding to the challenges to academic integrity caused by the rise of cheating in online exams, the second training session, which began at 10:15 a.m. WIB (Western Indonesian Time), focused on the implementation of Safe Exam Browser (SEB). SEB is a dedicated browser application designed to create a secure and controlled digital exam environment. This application effectively locks test takers’ devices, restricting access to designated exam platforms, and preventing unauthorized activities such as internet browsing, use of other applications, or copy-paste functions during the exam. The use of innovative technology like SEB not only ensures the fairness of digital exams but also contributes to Goal 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure, in developing educational technology capabilities.
A lively interactive discussion session was an integral part of each presentation, providing teachers with the opportunity to deepen their understanding and exchange ideas. The series of activities concluded at 11:15 a.m. WIB with a post-test, followed by an evaluation survey and a final documentation session, before all participants enjoyed a break and prayer time.
This Community Service Program is expected to not only improve the capabilities of Al-Izzah High School teachers in implementing modern curriculum and assessment, but also strengthen the culture of integrity and quality of education in schools, contributing significantly to the achievement of sustainable development goals in Indonesia.
