The Faculty of Science and Technology, Universita Airlangga, held a Guest Lecture on 30th October 2025, featuring two speakers from Prince of Songkla University (PSU), Thailand: Assoc. Prof. Dr. Klairung Samart and Asst. Prof. Dr. Thakerng Wongsirichot. The event was attended by lecturers and students from the Statistics and Biomedical Engineering Study Programs, as an effort to enhance academic competence and international insight in the fields of data analysis and health technology.
In the first session, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Klairung Samart discussed a comparison of data analysis approaches using regression and machine learning techniques. He explained that regression is superior for understanding relationships between variables and model interpretation, while machine learning is more powerful in producing accurate predictions, especially with complex and large data sets. Participants were introduced to how to select a method appropriate to the analysis objectives and the basic principles of model performance evaluation.
The second session, delivered by Asst. Prof. Dr. Thakerng Wongsirichot, focused on the application of artificial intelligence (AI) in the health sector. He explained how AI is used to analyze medical images, aid in early disease detection, support clinical decisions, and develop patient monitoring systems. Real-life case studies were presented to illustrate how technology can improve diagnostic accuracy and healthcare efficiency.
This activity contributes to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) through the use of technology to improve the quality of healthcare services; SDG 4 (Quality Education) by providing access to learning based on cutting-edge research; SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure) by strengthening innovation in statistics and biomedicine; and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) through international academic collaboration between Airlangga University and Prince of Songkla University.
